Income Tax (MTD)
Making Tax Digital (MTD) is the government's new way to report Income Tax Self Assessment (ITSA). Work through it in order: understand it, check if it applies to you, keep your records, then see your figures.
Education, not advice. The number that counts is the one HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) calculates. We are working towards HMRC recognition; this tool cannot file to live HMRC. Only the clearly labelled practice flow can send figures to HMRC's sandbox.
What this means
TaxSorted can add the records you include exactly, but it cannot see your full situation, so those totals may be incomplete. Any tax estimate is only as good as the facts supplied. A sandbox receipt is practice evidence, not a production filing or a paid tax bill.
Don't panic — the plain-words guide
What's actually true about MTD: who's in, what you send, the real deadlines and the real penalty position.
Step 1Am I in?
Check whether the rules apply to you, and from when, using your gross income.
Step 2Starter Books
Bring in transactions, review plain-language suggestions, and keep source-linked books in this browser.
Step 3Quarterly figures & estimate
Your running totals for each quarter, built from reviewed records and exportable for compatible MTD software, plus a cited estimate.
Step 4Your ITSA cockpit
See your records, estimate and quarter timing together. HMRC sandbox setup starts only when you choose it.
HandoffCarry the position in your Tax Passport
Keep the complete MTD request, answer, unknown facts and official receipts with your wider income and evidence map.
ToolMileage
Work out your flat-rate mileage deduction for a car, van or motorcycle, cited to gov.uk's current rates.
